Welcome to Just One More Cast. It is my hope that this will give you the opportunity to reach out to others that are experiencing the same life challenges that you are experiencing. It is also my hope that this site will enable the able bodied to understand what it might be like to walk in our shoes. I believe that it will be a great help to learn from others as we take this journey. So come on in, sit back, relax and enjoy.
About your host Rodney Hall and this community You might ask what brought me to this point; wanting to set up a web site that deals with the sportsmen’s life through the eyes of the disabled. Well here is your answer. Before I was disabled, I loved spending time out doors. It didn’t matter if I was hunting, fishing or hiking a mountain trail, that’s where I was the happiest. But that all changed one cool, beautiful day in October of two thousand. I won’t get into the descriptive details. I will just say that I suffered a Gran-Mal seizure. With no family history of seizures, this did come as quite a surprise. Over the next few months, my wife Dana noticed that there seemed to be something different about the way that I walked. There is a history of a very rare Neurological disorder in my family. Its called “Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.” But because we had been led to believe that we were not at risk, I really didn’t think too much of it. But at the next Doctor visit, she told him of her concern regarding my legs. He then did a physical examination followed by a few tests. The ride home was filled with a lot of twisted emotions as I tried to deal with the news that I had received that day. I never thought that I would ever have anything like this happen to me. I had so many dreams, so many plans. But at that point I saw them slipping away. And I didn’t believe that there was anything that I could do about it. By December of that same year I was still struggling with seizures and my walking had worsened to the point that even with a cane, I struggled to walk. At that time, my family Doctor told us that we needed to start looking for a wheel chair. This literally broke my heart. I had fought so hard up to that point. I decided that I wasn’t ready to give up. So I pushed forward, walking, stumbling, staggering with the cane in hand. Eventually I had to get crutches, and even a wheelchair. That was another emotional set back. Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia is a very strange disease. It can affect each person differently. Some might not even be aware that they have it, while others are hit very hard. But that is not where the oddity ends. It seems to have a mind of its own. It can affect you only mildly one day. And then hit you very hard the next. You literally do not know what your legs are going to do on the very next step. I have often tried to explain how it affects me, and probably failed miserably each time. But the best way to explain it is to say that when it is bad; it feels as if my legs have turned into concrete, very heavy with each muscle contracting to a degree that you can only imagine. Because of this disease I spent so much time at home that I had forgotten what made me happy. And believing that I could no longer do the things that I loved, was overwhelming. But at one of the moments that my legs weren’t too bad, I got an invite to go trout fishing. I jumped at the chance. And the time leading up to our departure, I was a kid again. I remember stepping out of the truck at the camp site and immediately feeling a ton of weight slipping from my shoulders as I soaked in everything wonderful about the great outdoors. I was overwhelmed with emotion as I realized that this is where I belonged.. Back home after the trip, I couldn’t stop talking about how much that it meant to me. That is when I knew that I had to spend more time doing what made me happy. And as I spent more time on the river I couldn’t help but think of the others out there that were dealing with the same situation. After spending countless hours on the Internet, I realized what I needed to do. I needed to open a web site that dealt with the disabled sportsmen. Not only discussing the sports end of the picture, but who we are and what it is like to live each day, playing the cards that we were dealt. In closing I would like to say this; whether you are disabled or not, your opinions and insights are very important. Since we live in the same world, why don’t we take this journey together? Sincerely Rodney Hall
